Toxic Positivity

Dawn Marie was recommended to someone looking for a job. This client had some very bad experiences dealing with sexual harassment and assault at work. As usual, when she complained to management, her complaints were dismissed and she was forced out of her position one way or another. Classic #metoo stuff. It’s been proven that a victim of sexual assault is likely to victimized again and no it is not the victim’s fault, it’s the perpetrator’s fault and the fault of those who either sided with the perpetrator or remained silent no matter how many times it happens. She voiced to Dawn Marie that she wanted to discuss her experiences on numerous occasions in order to learn how to navigate sexist workplaces better so this never happened again (if that’s even possible). The client had been scarred from her experiences and was now terrified. Dawn Marie repeatedly dismissed her concerns, calling her concerns ”negative.” The woman told Dawn Marie that sometimes it’s necessary to talk about ”negative” experiences in order to avoid repeating them. Dawn Marie dismissed her, again calling her negative and berating her for having such ”negative thinking.” Every concern this client brought up was met with berating from Dawn Marie. Dawn Marie told her client that she could email her at any time with concerns. When the client emailed Dawn Marie she’d refuse to answer citing various idiotic reasons. One time she said the client had not stated her concern in the form of a question. WTF. Usually Dawn Marie said she was ”in the woods with no internet.” Seriously? During the week? Dawn Marie had a full time job with Cablevision/Altice. Did Dawn Marie’s managers know that she was ”in the woods with no internet” getting no work done? Finally the client had had enough. She had paid for a block of Dawn Marie’s services and demanded her money back. The client had expected help finding a job, not constant berating. How is that even helpful. Dawn Marie of course did not answer so the client reported her to company she’d paid through. Dawn Marie got locked out of her account as a result and wrote a nasty email to the client stating that since the client had reported her, Dawn Marie got locked out and now it was going to take longer for the client to receive her funds. The client wasn’t having it and told Dawn Marie that if she (Dawn Marie) had answered her emails there would have been no need to report her and that Dawn Marie needed to take responsibility and stop blaming others.
