Never get a horse from them ever

We have owned and loved Belgian draft horses for 14 years, so we are not inexperienced horse owners. We made the mistake of believing all the positive reviews on the HDSC FB page and bought two horses sight unseen which is something we’ve never done and will never ever do again!!! We bought two horses for our young sons to learn to ride on and grow up with. The owner of this organization wildly misrepresents the age and health of the horses she sells. You will notice on ads she claims most horses, ours included, are about 15 years old….bombproof, more whoa than go, stand for farrier, vet checked etc etc. Within a couple months one of the horses choked, requiring an after-hours vet visit to tube him. We discovered then that both horses were NOT 15, but in their mid-20’s!! Now, roughly a year later, we’ve had to euthanize this same horse because he went down and is too old and frail to get up on his own. This was our son’s favorite horse.

The other horse we got is in better shape for his age although he is not broke the way he was described. He does not stand well for the farrier. I was told he was used for logging by an Amish family and that one of their children rode him bareback all the time. This guy runs if he sees a lead rope, and is too head shy to have done any recent work under harness. He’s also week in his hind legs and has a hard time getting himself up. I naturally thought it could be due to his work history and brought it up to HSDC. She said she never noticed it when he was with her. Well if you keep a horse in your care long enough to “rehab” it as she claims she does, then you couldn’t have missed this. The horse was down in the trailer when he arrived and had noticeable issues getting up while in the pasture within a day or two of his arrival.

For the people who have had a positive experience with this organization, I suspect it is a testament to the greatness of draft horses not to the greatness of HDSC. I found more stories just like ours on Ripoff Report, and on the FB page Bad Horse Dealers. I have a feeling that’s just the tip of the ice berg.
