Beware - Predatory Business Practices
Over the years, I have signed up for a number of online services where I enter my credit card information to begin a free trial, knowing my card will be charged if I don’t cancel after a certain number of days. I have no problem with this. However, WorthPoint is the first service I’ve used that billed me on a monthly basis after the free trial expired, without ever emailing me a notification or paid invoice A) to let me know they have begun their monthly billing, and B) when my card has been charged each subsequent month. Their business model is predicated on the idea that people will sign up for the 7-day trial (like I did), forget to cancel after realizing the service wasn’t a fit, and continue to be covertly billed each month, with zero notification this is happening. Again, I have no issue with the fact I was auto-billed after 7 days — this is standard. I’m taking issue with the fact that I was billed six times without even once receiving a notification or a paid invoice. If I hadn’t seen the recurring charge nestled inside my bank statement, this could have gone on indefinitely. I contacted Worthpoint and said I was fine paying for the first month, but wanted a refund for the other five months. Even after I went to the Better Business Bureau, they only provided a refund for one of the six months. Additionally, their customer service team became rude and unprofessional, even as I maintained a professional tone with them.
